Terms
The rules of the capsule.
Last updated 27 October 2026
These terms apply when you use 100 Years From Now: reading messages, writing one, or buying a Postcard to 2126. By using the site you agree to them. Please also read the privacy page.
1. The service
100 Years From Now is a public archive where people send one short message to the people of 2126. Messages appear as lights on a globe, can be read and translated by anyone, and one is chosen each day as Today's message.
2. Your account
You need a free account to write a message. Use a real email address you can access, keep your password safe, and create only one account for yourself. Each person can have one message shining at a time.
3. Your message
You keep ownership of what you write. By sending it, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to store, publish, translate and reproduce it, together with your nickname and country, for as long as it is kept: on the site, on Today's message, on share images and on Postcards, and when telling people about the project. You confirm that the words are yours to share and don't reveal private information about other people.
4. Rules and moderation
Sincere messages in any language are welcome, including sad, angry, political or religious ones, as long as they are respectful. We don't publish:
- hate or harassment toward any person or group;
- sexual content, threats, or encouragement of violence or self-harm;
- personal details such as phone numbers, addresses, emails or full names of private people;
- advertising, links, spam or gibberish.
Messages are checked with the help of an AI model and, where needed, by a person. We can decline a message, or hide or remove one at any time, including after it has been published or kept. If you think a message breaks these rules, please report it.
5. How long messages last
- Founding period. Until Postcards to 2126 can be bought, every approved message is kept until 2126, free, as a founding message.
- Free messages. After the founding period, a free message shines for 24 hours from approval. Then it fades: its light stays as a dim ember and its words are no longer shown. You can then write a new one.
- Today's message. A message chosen as Today's message is kept until 2126, free.
- Postcards. A message kept as a Postcard to 2126 stays until 2126.
"Until 2126" is what this site is built for and what we intend. But no one can honestly promise that a website will run for a hundred years, and we can't guarantee that the service will operate without interruption until then. If we ever have to close it, we will try to give notice on the site and to let authors get a copy of their message.
6. Postcard to 2126
A Postcard to 2126 costs $1 (USD), plus any sales tax or VAT, which is calculated and shown at checkout before you pay. It is linked to your current message and includes:
- keeping that message until 2126, including bringing it back if it has already faded;
- choosing the colour of your light, which you can change later;
- a postcard to download as a PNG image or printable PDF, and a public page where anyone can check it;
- 20¢ (20% of the price before tax) given to the charity you choose.
We send the charity shares every month for postcards bought more than 30 days earlier, and publish each transfer with its receipt on the Impact page. Card fees come out of our share, never the charity's. The donation is made by us, so it isn't a tax-deductible gift from you.
7. Refunds
If you're not happy with your Postcard, contact us within 30 days of buying it and we'll refund it in full. A refunded Postcard is cancelled: its charity share isn't paid, and its message may go back to the rules for free messages. This doesn't affect any rights you have under the law where you live.
8. Our responsibility
We work to keep the site running and your message safe, but the service is provided as it is. Messages are written by members of the public and are their authors' own views, not ours. As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for indirect losses, and our total responsibility to you for a Postcard is limited to what you paid for it. Nothing in these terms limits rights that the law doesn't allow us to limit.
9. Changes and contact
We may update these terms as the project grows. We'll change the date at the top when we do, and the version in force when you bought a Postcard applies to that purchase. Questions are welcome through the contact page.
